Dholavira-the lost civilization of India!

How many of you know that in the state of Gujarat, hidden in the parched lands of the Kutch, lies an ancient civilization!

Yes friends, it IS actually possible to go and witness the splendor and complexity of the Indus Valley Civilization in India. Sometimes we get so caught up in the web of our technological advancement and progress that we miss exploring what lies in our own backyard(or India’s Backyard). Let me introduce to you the ancient civilization of Dholavira located in the Rann of Kutch, Gujarat.
dholaviraDholavira is the larger of the two most incredible  excavations of the Indus Valley Civilization or Harappan culture, dating back to 4500 years ago.You will be spellbound by this site, which has this intense environment that comes with being surrounded by the Great Rann of Kutch, is a unique insight into the pioneering Harappan mind, with one of the world’s earliest and best planned water conservation systems and what might be the world’s first signboards, written in ancient Indus script.

dhola1The excavation, started in 1990’s  tells the story of the 7 stages of the civilization, from development to maturity to decay! How exciting to be in the same space as our ancestors from 1600 BC who have in their stride a well-designed and well-developed town, competent to beat the blueprint of any modern-day urban plans.

Here, on the ruins, you will have a chance to contemplate what progress and civilization mean and what, if anything, is truly permanent.
